In this post, I will be explaining to you what networking is and how it can take your business to the next level. putting in a few PRO-Tips in the mix.

For those of you who don’t know me my name Is Jordan Schimnowski and I am a registered massage therapist in Winnipeg Manitoba. Massage therapy is my passion, my joy, and my art form.

I’ve been running Motio Massage Therapy, for going on 8 years now and can honestly say, I can’t see myself doing anything else.

On the contrary, I didn’t get to the point I’m at right now by accident or by flook. It all came with a price, and also came with a lot of networking and internal marketing.

Before we get started

I would like to give you a definition of Networking in my own words. Networking: Is the act of interacting with people, professionals, businesses, and sharing professional contacts with each other to obtain business. it will help take your business to the next level.

When I first started my practice in 2013 I had no idea what I was doing, I knew I had to find clients and also had to talk to strangers. I knew people would not come for a massage with me unless they got to know me first. because well I’m a dude and well when I started out in the field there was still a lot of skepticism about men being massage therapists, and I struggled to deal with the constant response of

” you seem really nice but unfortunately because your a dude I wouldn’t be comfortable with you touching me” or I got this one once ” oh you seem nice but I was raped by a man and because of that I won’t be comfortable with you working on me” and another one “hey man you seem like a solid dude but I find if a man touches me that is gay, so I can’t, get a massage by you” and one more ” hey sorry man but you’re gay and if you massage me you might not be able to take your hands off me”.

OMG, I’ve heard it all! so you can see the struggle me and I’m sure many of you have dealt with similar comments if not worse. (share your comments in the comments below I would love to hear what you all have experienced)

So back to networking so as mentioned before networking is the act of interacting with people in the attempts of sharing contacts.

1st Thing You Need To Know About Networking.

Networking Can Happen Anywhere Anytime With Anyone.

What I mean by this is that you can network with your friends, your family, your sports team, your massage association your knitting group, your volunteer locations, sports events, formal events, casual events, a party any group of people that you associate with can be your network. so don’t feel like the only way to network is going to spend money to be part of a networking group.

2nd Thing You Need To Know About Networking

Be comfortable talking about yourself Why? because your awesome and everyone needs to know that.

In most networking groups you are required to present yourself in a 30-60 second infomercial, to talk about who you are what you do, your qualifications and your monthly promotion or interesting fact. So you mine as well make an informercial from the get-go when you’re developing your business plan. It’s also good to do this even if you’re employed by a spa or clinic as networking and massage therapy is about creating professional relationships with clients and people in your networking circle. and RMTs rely heavily on Referal business or word of mouth marketing.

PRO TIP:

clients are going to interact with you first off by your appearance, the first 4 seconds of talking to you and then also how you interact with them or how well you can carry on a conversation. I pulled a list of 10 conversation starters for professional networking from Lifehack.org visit them here these are some really great ones to try. (let me know how they went for you in the comments below )

3rd Thing you Need to Know about Networking For Massage Therapy

You actually have to go out and about and be in-person for networking to be successful

Yes, you read that correctly… the only way networking is the most successful is actually based on the concept of “out of sight out of Mind” people instantly will make a connection with the face the name and the interaction they had with you. So it’s ideal for you to know that being in a social setting with strangers is actually quite important. It’s one thing to be on social media, and be online and to develop your massage therapy business through your website and social presence but if the brand doesn’t match the platform and the platform doesn’t match the Therapist you have a disconnect in your brand which could come across as being illegitimate to the client. A way you can help reinforce this is through networking amongst actual people.

PRO TIP:

What is your favorite hobby? do you like dancing? maybe you like Eating? perhaps you like idunno Wrestling. Whatever you like doing and gives you joy and is in some sort of a group setting go do it and take advantage of the contacts you may have right in front of you they do have the common interest with you and keep attending. The group, class or event and will help you feel more comfortable and within sight of your potential network and contacts. Iit can take your business to the next level.

4th Thing you Should Know About Networking

Find Synergistic Or Complementary Providers

The next thing that I want to share with you is synergy: Is a symbiotic business relationship that indirectly serves the same customer or client. For example chiropractors, physiotherapists, dentists, doctors, home care services, etc. Most of My clientele came to me through networking with chiros, physios, and even doctors. This may seem daunting, but you have to realize we are all on the same team when it comes to client care, we all strive to provide client-focused services to help treat people who are suffering from body pain.

We all excel in our specialties but sometimes one modality will work better for different clients. Once you create those connections and you start referring to each other and start getting results for the client you actually will become more of an authority in your modality and will instill confidence in your clients and your colleagues. This is a good position to be in. At Motio Massage Therapy we actually have about 5 different chiropractors all around Winnipeg that we refer to in different areas of the city. When you get to this point you also become a go-to person for your clients when they are looking for other services, which actually makes you and inbound marketing hub for clients.

PRO TIP:

Finds your closest chiropractor who doesn’t already offer massage therapy and asks them to go on a coffee or one to one to learn more about there business. When you show any interest in their business it will spark interest in you as a professional it also puts a face to the name and will bring awareness to them that you’re close by. Remember if you’re out of sight your out of mind. It can take your business to the next level.

5th Thing You Should Know About Networking As An RMT

Join a Networking Group This Will Expand Your Horizon

Now there are hundreds of different networking groups all across the world so chances are there is probably a chapter right in your community. For the past 5 years I have been part of the Business Networking International group or BNI and over the years has helped me make close to $40k in revenue over the years

I have made many different friends, colleagues, and connections over the years which really helped me get comfortable with Networking and helped me get to a larger office, build my clientele and even created an authority among my network. BNI is not the only one out there it was the one I chose because I valued the way their program worked. Which was based on the givers gain philosophy of what goes around comes around basically if I refer your business, you will naturally want to return the favor by finding business for me. this concept really hit home for me and really offered the best options for me.

Here is a list of 5 different networking groups that may work for you go to a meeting oftentimes you can contact the president of the chapter or group and invite yourself to the meeting usually they include food also.
